Sahara (E. entrance, Wengert meeting room). Program: "National Wildlife Refuges," by a representative of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Las Vegas. Learn about the National Wildlife Refuge system and, in particular, four refuges near Las Vegas: Desert NWR, Pahranagat NWR, Ash Meadows NWR, and Moapa Valley NWR, and about the flora, fauna, eco-systems, endangered species, and environmental issues. Hear about recreational, educational, and volunteering opportunities. All members and general public are welcome. Refreshments, announcements, and free literature, too.

Gold Butte introductory tour. What's this mysterious region of Southeast Nevada being proposed for a National Conservation Area, with wilderness? Join Vicky Hoover in a car camping trip right after the Shoshone desert wilderness meeting and find out. Central commissary, petroglyphs, Joshua trees, a peak scramble.

*Arrow Canyon Exploratory. 6-7 mi. RT. Up past the retention dam to see what we find. Are these pictographs or petroglyphs?

FEBRUARY 21 (SUNDAY)
*Bowl of Fire to Anniversary Narrows. We will hike past the north end of the Bowl of Fire, over a low pass into a large wash, over another pass into the drainage that leads to the narrows. This is a long hike, about
14 mi. requiring an usually early start. How did the narrows form?

FEBRUARY 26-28 (FRIDAY-SUNDAY)
*Death Valley NP Service Trip. Come join us for our annual service project in the largest National Park in the lower 48. This year we will be working with park personnel on a variety of projects on Fri. and Sat.
The projects are still being narrowed down-the park staff has a lot we can do. Check here for updates. We will be staying as guests of the park in the beautiful Breakfast Canyon campground, and the park staff also promises some great hiking, including a Sunday morning hike before heading back that afternoon. Come for all or part of the weekend.
Dogs are not encouraged as they must be on leash and cannot go on any of the hikes. Be ready for a great time -- doing a good project for the park, getting to know more about the parks resources, park employees, and the issues facing the park. Carpooling encouraged. Please RSVP.

*Wildflower Hike. If the rains have been good, we will find one of the best areas for about a 7 mile hike in the Lake Mead area. Otherwise we will hike in the Cottonwood Valley section of Red Rock. What plants come up with winter rains?

Sahara (E. entrance, Wengert meeting room). Program: “Wildflowers of the Mojave Desert,” by Bob Peloquin, retired Biology professor, Red Rock interpretative naturalist, and Master Gardener. Learn about the general wildflower features of the Mojave Desert and comparisons with other deserts, and between north and south Mojave. The local Spring Mountain Range, which is one of the most biologically diverse of the more than 90 mountain ranges of the Mojave, will also be discussed. All members and general public are welcome. Adopt-a-Highway Clean-up. Come on out for some walk and talk as we spruce up that southern approach to Red Rock. Lots of people were honking their thank-yous to us last time. Meet at the Dunkin' Donuts (west of I-215 in Albertson shopping center) at 8:30 AM.

Valley of Fire Exploratory. We'll follow one of the beautiful sandstone arroyos for 5-6 mi.

*Arizona Hot Springs, LMNRA. Bring a suit and a sandwich as we take the romp to the emerald green river for lunch and pause for a soak at the top of the ladder. Why is the rock in the bottom of the wash different from that of the walls?

*Historic Railroad Tunnels, LMNRA. Family hike. Friendly dogs welcome.
Hike through interesting tunnels on old RR grade. Great views of Lake Mead. Learn some history and geology. Approx. 4 mil. Level 1.

APRIL 17-18 (SATURDAY-SUNDAY)
*Bonanza Peak Trail Backpack. We'll start at Cold Creek, up to the beautiful views from the ridge, camp at Wood Springs, and meet up with the drive-around party on the Bristlecone Trail (the drive-arounds will day hike from/back to Cold Creek Sat. and from/to Bristlecone on Sun., join in either/both with Gracie if you don't backpack!) The north 2/3rds of this trail offers a fresh wilderness experience over 15 mi. and a feeling of alpine remoteness much like the Sierras. Can you see Telescope Peak from this ridge?

May and Beyond...
MAY (DATE-TBA)
*In the works: Service trip to Kalaupapa National Historic Park, on the island of Molokai, Hawaii (5 days), to work with the National Park Service on natural and cultural resource projects. A rare opportunity to live for a week in the isolated area serving as a settlement for people afflicted with Hansen’s disease (leprosy) since 1866. Google to learn more about Kalaupapa. Trip limited to 12 participants; moderate.

JUNE 29-JULY 5 (TUESDAY-MONDAY)
*Coyote Gulch, Escalante UT. We will leave Las Vegas about 6am June 29 with only gasoline stops and one at the visitor center in Escalante to pick up our permit. Lunch at trailhead and then backpack 4 mi. to first campsite in alcove next to the creek. Each day we will be in awe as we hike along Coyote Creek with one day possible along the Escalante River.
Hiking is easy to moderate over mostly flat canyon bottom with total miles with backpack about 30 mi. There are cottonwood and willows within most of the canyon. Campsites are where the sun does not shine and stays cool. Enjoy the water (bring swimsuit) at the lower end of Coyote Creek.
Christmas in July – what are all these lights we will see after dark that are moving around and not moving? You will learn about the origin of the water and springs found here as well as how the canyon was formed. Limit 12. David Hardy (875-4549, hardyhikers@embarqmail.com; e-mail preferred).
