JUNE MEETING

Our thanks to our speaker for our May General Meeting: Ranger Rick Keller

          Ranger Rick Keller

Rick Keller, a ranger with the Nevada Division of State Parks, told us about Nevada's 25 State parks, where they're located, & the many recreational and educational opportunities available, including parks in the Las Vegas area: Spring Mountain Ranch, Old Las Vegas Mormon Fort, Valley of Fire, & Big Bend of the Colorado.

SNG Leaders Participate in OZ C.R.E.W. Lake Mead Cleanup

On the last Saturday in June four of the Southern Nevada Group ExCom journeyed to Lake Mead to participate in an on-going program by the National Park Service called OZ C.R.E.W. (Operation Zero, Citizens Removing & Eliminating Waste). The “OZ CREW” goal is to engage community groups and families to experience Lake Mead National Recreation Area while working together to keep our national park clean.

It was our pleasure to join Barbara Sharp, Assistant Volunteer Coordinator with the Lake Mead National Recreation Area and our skipper and leader for the day. Rita Ransom helped get our leaders organized and out to enjoy a wonderful day on and in the water.

ANNUAL SUMMER PICNIC

SUMMER PICNIC & CAMPOUT AUGUST 8
Do you need a break from the heat? Want to socialize with your fellow Sierra Club members and friends? Do you enjoy hot dogs and hamburgers grilled in the great outdoors? Well, we have the perfect recipe for summer fun....our annual (sort of!) picnic held among the cool pines of Mt. Charleston with camping on the same site that night for those who are interested. This will be a potluck with the Club providing the hot dogs and hamburgers with all the trimmings. Plus, there will be some surprise activities. Small donation of $3.00 per person requested to help defray costs. To reduce our carbon footprint, carpooling is enouraged, and we won't be using disposables,  so bring your own plates and utensils. All members, friends, and guests welcome. For more information and to RSVP, contact Matt VanNote at vansvan@hotmail.com.

Reduce, Re-Use, RECYCLE!

INTERESTED IN RECYCLING?  We're forming a group to work on increasing the scope and frequency of recycling locally. Contact Maxine Miller, millerma1@cox.net and let's get going with this!

MEMORIAL FOR FRED TREAT - In memory of our recent Group chairman, Fred Treat, who passed away last January, the Southern Nevada Group is planning to purchase an engraved tile for the memorial walkway at the Red Rock Canyon NCA visitors center. If you wish to donate to Fred’s memorial, please contact Gary Beckman 648-2983, glbeckman@hotmail.com.
