How to Get Involved in the GBG

Volunteers are the backbone of all nonprofit organizations. This is definitely true for the Sierra Club and our local GBG. Over time, all aspects of our group need fresh ideas and people who are willing to jump in and volunteer their talents. Currently, we are voting three members onto our ExCom. These are volunteers who are committing one evening a month and the time needed at home or at functions to help run various activities for our group. However, each of these "Chairs" would be thrilled to have other members to help them. If you have an interest in helping out in any capacities, please call the Chair listed on our Group page. For Outings give me a call. We are always looking for new people interested in leading a variety of outings, especially easier paced and family oriented outings. However, there are a lot of other ways to get involved with outings, too. I really encourage you to go out on a Service Trip. Those of us that went on one recently in the Black Rock Desert found it a really special experience and a whole lot of fun. Grace is Chair for Membership and she could always use a hand mailing postcards we send to all new members. We also want to reach out to current members through e- mail and phone calls to find out what kinds of activities and outings you want our group to offer. Perhaps, you have a talent for Public Outreach. Kurt would appreciate help with distributing the Trails to our numerous drop-off points, along with ideas for new places that will help make our group more visible. If you LOVE wilderness, Kurt's your man to point you in the best direction to see what you can do for Nevada. He's also trying to work with local news and radio stations to give us more exposure. If you have a talent for this, he'd love the help. Our Program Chair is Larry. He is always looking for great ideas for programs that will meet the interests of our general membership. We are currently having to assess whether we can continue having meetings at Bartley Ranch because of a doubling in fees by the County. If you have input that might help, I'm sure Larry would appreciate hearing from you. Chip is our Political Chair. If you have an interest in political issues that our local group might need to consider, please give Chip a call. He can share your input at our ExCom or put you in touch with the right person at the Chapter level. If you are one of those people who love to help organize fundraisers we can use your input. We are looking for innovative, fun ways to raise money for our local group to pay for our Programs, costs incurred for Outings, and money we donate to other environmental organizations or causes, including a sponsorship for a local scholarship. You can contact either myself or Kurt for this. I really hope you will consider becoming a voluteer for the GBG in 2005. We not only have a lot of fun, but find our time well worth the effort because we are contributing to causes we really value. Come join us in building a stronger more effective group in the Sierra Club. Happy Trails. Holly Coughlin (GBG Chair and Outings Chair)

Great Basin Group says Thanks!

The Great Basin Group would to say a very sincere thank you to all those special people who allow us to put the Toiyabe Trails out for distribution in their fine establishments. Last month in Reno and Carson City we distributed 1975 copies of the Trails, which included 300+ at Earth Day. We could never reach as many people as we do with out the generosity and kindness of the following people and places. We ask that when you visit and support these great places please say thanks for the all work they do to spread the word.
