Donations For Outings -Thanks for All Your Contributions!

The Great Basin Group's Outing Leaders are collecting $1 donations from all members on outings ($2 for non-members). These contributions will greatly help to enhance our Outings Program by providing leaders with more training opportunities, provide new first aid kits to all leaders, and help offset the cost of our bi-monthly Outings Meetings. Any extra funds may be used to help finance the cost of our Program Meetings at Bartley Ranch.
Our Outings Leaders provide a variety of outings in our effort to meet the needs our membership. They are all volunteers who endeavor to share their love and knowledge of the outdoors in the amazing country around us. Your donations will provide essential support to the Great Basin Group's Outing Program and will be greatly appreciated.

 

May 2 (Saturday) 8:00 AM
Historic V & T Flume System on McClellan Peak.
This loop hike will be along a portion of the route of the circa 1870 wooden box flume which brought water from the Carson Range to Virginia City. Hike is about 10 miles with less than 800 feet of gain. Some off-trail. High-clearance 4-wheel drive vehicle necessary, or possible ride-share. Learn some history of the area. ND. May 2 (Saturday) 9:00 AM
Hunter Creek Waterfall Hike.
Join us on a 7 mile hike with about 800 foot of gain. This hike is a bit difficult because parts are steep and loose, so good boots are a must. Wildflowers should be showing and evidence of new growth after the fire. DL. Trip limit 20. Leaders: Pat Kleames (359-5089), Chuck Oliveira (786-2988). Moderate.

Kumiva Peak Day Hike.
This outing is in the Selenite Range north of what used to be Winnemucca Lake. Fantastic views toward the Black Rock and Kumiva Valley. This is a high desert hike in very rocky, somewhat harsh terrain. Trip will be off-trail, about 8 mi. RT with up to 2,000 feet of elevation gain. Bismark Peak in the Pine Nuts.
Spring frolic in the Pine Nut Mountains east of Carson City. Bismark Peak at 7,529 feet has great views. The hike is about 5 miles and has under 1,000 feet of gain, but 1.5 miles are cross-country. Mt. Rose Waterfall Snow Hike.
We'll quickly hike (in boots) up from route 431 to reach the snow-buried Tahoe Rim Trail. From there we'll snow-hike on deep & mostly firm snow for 2 miles along the very scenic mountainside to reach the well known waterfall for a lunch stop. About 5 miles RT. Pond Peak Day Hike.
POSTPONED. Desert Peak bag of the highest summit at 8,300 feet at the south end of the Pah Rah Range, west of Wadsworth. Trip is about 11 miles and has 2,500 feet of gain, half of it cross-country of rocky terrain. Not for the faint of heart. Expect to learn about birds and maybe wild mustang sightings. DL. May 9 (Saturday) 8:30 AM
Spooner Summit North Snowshoe.
CANCELLED. We'll plan to snowshoe northward from Spooner Summit, near the famous Tahoe Rim Trail, gradually ascending 700 feet to reach various viewpoints over Lake Tahoe. We expect to encounter many coyote, rabbit, squirrel, ect. tracks as we explore non-trail regions. Trip is about 4-5 miles RT and 700 feet gain. ND. Sahwave Range Hike.
We will visit the Sahwave Range east of Pyramid Lake. This seldom-visited range has beautiful granite formations, lush hidden springs, and other wilderness values. Views of the Black Rock playa and others. Our hike will be all cross-country for about 6-7 miles and up to 2,000 feet of gain. DL. Leaders: David von Seggern (303-8461), Ileana Tibuleac (784-6256). Moderately strenuous.

May 10 (Sunday) 8:30 AM
Mt. Davidson Day Hike.
Trek along the spine of the Virginia Range from Geiger Grade to the top of Mt. Davidson and take a very steep descent (over 2,000 feet) right into Virginia City. Hike is about 8 miles and about 1,000 foot of gain, but the descent is note-worthy. We must set up a car-shuttle so a trip limit of 16 is necessary. Learn about a variety of flora and fauna, possible mustang sightings. DOK with leash. Leaders: Holly Coughlin (331-7488), Craig Mastos (348-1862;maquis@softcom.net). Moderately strenuous.

May 11-15 (Monday-Friday)
Table Mountain Monitoring Trip.
Join Sierra Club, Friends of Nevada Wilderness, and the Austin-Tonopah Ranger District as we collect baseline data concerning trails, campsites, invasive weeds, and potential stewardship projects. Considerable drive time should be expected, but it will be worth it as the hiking will be great and ample opportunities to see large populations of elk and mule deer. Many Paleo-Indian sites can be found in the Monitor Range, as well. Transportation can be arranged. ND. Leader: Wes Hoskins (762-6730; wes@nevadawilderness.org). Easy.

Great Basin Group Program Meeting "Stories in Stone: The Rock Art of Nevada"
Nevada 's prehistoric rock art is among the most spectacular and fascinating to be found in the world. On Thursday, May 14, Dr. Angus Quinlan, the Director of the Nevada Rock Art Foundation, will introduce our members to the varied styles and visually stunning designs that make up Nevada 's rock art and address the compelling questions about prehistoric social practices that this monument type evokes in those who encounter it. This fragile form of archaeology is increasingly threatened by the affects of population growth, and the efforts of the Nevada Rock Art Foundation to promote the long-term protection of Nevada rock art will be described.All programs and meetings are open to the public. El Dorado Canyon near Dayton Dayhike.
Hike about 13 miles on a in and out, with under 1,000 feet of gain. Riparian habitat with many small stream crossings. Lunch at a natural arch and see a small slot canyon on the way out. Learn some history of the area. ND. Leader: T A Taro (775-530-2935). Moderately strenuous.

Big Mama in the Virgina Mountains.
Day hike near the Monkey Condos in the Virginia Mountains. Moderate hike of 6 miles RT and elevations gain of close to 1,800 feet with a 1.5 mile ascent to lunch atop Big Mama Peak. Enjoy amazing views and a variety of desert landscape. Learn about some interesting rock formations and mining. DOK. Leaders: Pat Kleames (359-5089), Gracie Caudill (626-7873). Moderately strenuous.

McKissick Canyon Dayhike.
Hike up the grade of this canyon leading to near the top of the Dogskin Mountain Range out of Winnemucca Valley. Views 2,300 feet above the Winnemucca Ranch property where new suburban development is threatened. Trip is about 7 miles RT and 2,100 feet of gain. Learn about potential threats to wilderness areas. May 18 (Monday) 6:30 PM

Social Get-Together at Buckbean Brewery & Conditioning Hike.
The social hour will start at 7:00 PM and end at 9:00 PM at the Buckbean Brewery off East McCarren Blvd. For those of you inclined to go on the conditioning hike, it will be slightly shortened to 3 mi. and 800 feet of gain, to allow us time to join the folks at the brewery around 7:30. Black Rock Rendezvous.
Camping and touring for a weekend with speakers and visits to geysers and hot springs, including famous Fly Geyser. Band and potluck on Saturday night. Additional fees on some tours. Learn about the Black Rock Desert! Trip limit 15. DL with leash. Leader: David Book (843-6443). Easy.

Mt. Rose Saddle Snowshoe/Hike.
We'll intermittently hike with snowshoes or boots to get near the Mt. Rose waterfall. Rising above the meadow floor we'll attempt to reach the Mt. Rose saddle at 9,600 feet, but turn left to follow the flagged Rim-2-Reno trail leg over the large bowl in the mountainside, for our lunch stop. About 6-7 miles RT and 800 feet of gain. ND. Prison Hill Carson City.
Hike about 6 miles RT with 1,100 feet of gain/loss. Trek from Silver Saddle Ranch to the top of Prison Hill then follow the ridge south to the Mexican Dam and return to cars. DL. Leader: Donna Inversin (775-315-6763). Moderate.

May 31 (Sunday) 8:00 AM
Pah Rah Ridgetop Trek.
Stroll the ridge top of the Pah Rah Range northeast of Sparks. We will cross the proposed areas of two wind energy generation farms and learn about their possible impacts. Views of Pyramid Lake, wildlife, and lush (for Nevada) high meadows. Trip is about 12 miles RT, mostly on existing roads, with 1,000 feet of gain. DL. Leaders: David von Seggern (303-8461). Moderate.
