May 3 (Saturday)
Big Mama Day Hike (Climb). Come explore the desert environment in the Virginia Mountains. Outing will be approximately 7-8 miles in length with 2,000 foot of elevation gain. Participants need to be prepared for a more difficult hike as much of the outing is off-trail on rocky, steep terrain. Hiking boots are necessary. The reward is fabulous views of Pyramid Lake and the surrounding area. Trip will begin around 8:30 and return around 4:00 PM. DOK. Trip limit 14. The John C Two Enigma Hike near Dayton. Discover some history of the area as we visit two features possibly associated with old mining operations. GB Group general meeting. Geologic Tales of Lake Tahoe How was Lake Tahoe formed? A meteorite…volcanic eruption…glaciers? Few people who visit Lake Tahoe know much about the geology of the largest alpine lake in North America. Western Nevada College Geology Professor Winnie Kortemeier, a dynamic and funny speaker, will give a multimedia presentation about the lake’s ancient volcanic activity. She will talk about fallacies of how Lake Tahoe was formed and explain the most recent ideas on that topic. She will also discuss her recent research on the youngest volcanic rocks in the region and the insight that those rocks give to not only Lake Tahoe’s formation, but also the type of eruption that might be expected in the Tahoe Basin in the future. Mt. Davidson Day Hike. Join us on one of our favorite trips for the month of May. Mt. Davidson is the highest peak that rises directly above Virginia City. We will observe the native flora and fauna in the area; possibly including a herd of wild horses. This outing is for seasoned hikers at 8 miles in length and about 1,400 feet of elevation gain. Participants MUST have good knees for the over 2,000 foot drop down the face of the mountain into Virginia City. A car shuttle will be set up. Plan on a short stop in V.C. for a cold drink afterward. Mt. Rose Trail to Waterfall. This dayhike is intended to be fairly easy with a length of close to four miles and elevation gain of about 600 feet. The falls are off the main trail that climbs to the summit of Mt. Rose. Learn about the flora, fauna, and some of the history of the new trail. Trip will begin around 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. DOK. Peak bag of Clark Mountain, the highest peak at the north end of the Virginia Range; just south of Patrick. Starting at the elevation of the Truckee River and climbing to 7200'. 9.7 miles RT, and 2500-ft elevation gain. Moderately hard.
