Donations For Outings -Thanks for All Your Contributions!

The Great Basin Group's Outing Leaders are collecting $1 donations from all members on outings ($2 for non-members). These contributions will greatly help to enhance our Outings Program by providing leaders with more training opportunities, provide new first aid kits to all leaders, and help offset the cost of our bi-monthly Outings Meetings. Any extra funds may be used to help finance the cost of our Program Meetings at Bartley Ranch.
Our Outings Leaders provide a variety of outings in our effort to meet the needs our membership. They are all volunteers who endeavor to share their love and knowledge of the outdoors in the amazing country around us. Your donations will provide essential support to the Great Basin Group's Outing Program and will be greatly appreciated.

Tuesday Evening Conditioning Hikes. We will be leading slow-paced conditioning hikes on Tuesdays throughout the summer. Hikes are about 3-4 miles, with minimal to moderate gain of 800 feet, in the parks and foothills of the Reno-Sparks area. We hike apx. two hours. Learn about flora and fauna. DOL Okay. July 3 (Thursday) 5:30 PM
Longest Day Evening Hike. Hike to the top of "Road to Nowhere" peak, the highest one on the skyline east of Reno. Six miles RT, and 1500-ft elevation gain. Brisk pace, not for beginning hikers. Learn about the stars. We will take advantage of the latest sunset and the longest twilight of the year, to march until sunset. DL. Leader: Ridge Walker (853-8055; edc@unr.edu). July 4-6, Friday-Saturday)
Leader's Choice Black Rock Hot Springs Trip and Tour. New Moon will mean great stars for this primitive camping trip and car tour of hot springs and the Black Rock Desert area. Possible access to private hot springs such as the famous Fly Geyser or Great Boiling Hot Spring. Camp at Soldier Meadows Hot Springs. Take food and water for three days. 4 WD preferred, high clearance 2WD okay, carpooling if possible. Learn about the amazing Black Rock region. Trip limit 12. ND. Trip leader: David Book (843-6443). Castle Peak Loop. After 3 easy miles to Peter Grubb Hut, we'll climb off- trail up to Basin Peak. Then go along rock cliff over to Castle Peak at 9,100 ft for incredible 360 degree views. Descend on-trail. 10 miles,1900 ft total ascent. Learn about flora and fauna. DOK. Weber Lake to Paradise Lake on The Pacific Crest Trail. A seldom hiked section of the Pacific Crest Trail. Very interesting rock formations and remote meadows not often seen. Freel Peak Dayhike. The highest mountain on Tahoe's east shore, with 4,000 foot of gain and apx. 10 miles, this is a hike to be experienced at least once. However, the pace will be moderate to brisk and a possible cross-country route coming back. Not a hike for beginners. Learn about the flora and fauna we observe. Showers Lake Loop day hike at Carson Pass. Hwy 88 About 9 miles in a loop through wildflowers with scenic views along MeissRidge. Return through the Upper Truckee River watershed with grassy meadows usually with a profusion of wildflowers. Elevation gain about 1400 feet for the day.  Learn some history of the area. N.D. July 19 (Saturday ) 2:00 PM
Beat the Heat!
Ice-Skating and Swimming in Squaw Valley, then dinner in Truckee. Ice-skating at High Camp in Squaw Valley (elevation 8,200 feet). Beat the heat in July. Outdoor ice rink with view of Lake Tahoe, temperature usually around 80 degrees in Squaw Valley in July, big outdoor pool with waterfalls and giant jacuzzi. Afterwards, dinner in Truckee in the evening around 6:30 p.m. Location of restaurant to be announced. Cost: $32 for ice-skating (includes skate rental and tramway ride up and down the mountain) and use of swimming pool and jacuzzi (includes towel and locker).
OR $27 for ice-skating without swimming OR $28 for swimming without skating OR $22 for cable car ride up and down the mountain with no skating or swimming. Meet at ice-rink at top of mountain at 2 p.m. For more information, contact Richard Arbib at (775)685-2600.

Bronco Creek, past Mt Rose Saddle. For 3 miles, we'll follow the easy Tahoe Rim Trail to waterfall. Then we'll continue up to the "saddle" intersecting Rim2Reno & Mt Rose trails. Then descend 1.5 miles north along Rim2Reno to Bronco Crk & lunch. 10 miles,1600 ft total ascent. Learn about the Tahoe Rim Trail. DOK. July 20th (Sunday) 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM
Tahoe Wildflower Hike This hike is relatively hard (about 7 miles with an elevation gain of 2000 feet), but well worth the effort. We begin at one of the most beautiful Lakes south of Lake Tahoe – Woods Lake. We first climb about 1000 feet to Round Top Lake finding a wide variety of flowers along the way.  From there we hike another 1000 feet to Round Top peak, and with a little luck find and learn about the stunning late bloomers that live here. The view from Round Top summit is awesome (10,300 feet) – you can see Lake Tahoe in one direction and the Desolation wilderness in the other. Christopher's Loop Overlook. From Ponderosa Ranch, we'll SLOWLY hike up svc roads to world-famous Tahoe Rim Trl & the white granite. Then 3 mi south to Christopher's Loop spur. Spectacular panorama of Lk Tahoe way above turquoise Sand Harbor. Learn about local wildlife. 12 miles, 2300 ft ascent. DOK. July 26 (Saturday)
Packer Saddle to Sierra Buttes Fire Lookout. On a clear day you can see forever. Views of Lassen Peak, Mt. Rose, Mt. Lola, beautiful glacial canyons and lakes will reward hikers on this 3.5 mile, 2,300 foot (7 miles round trip. climb up to the dark pinnacle summit known as the Sierra Buttes. This moderately strenuous hike includes a PCT ridge walk and requires good trail shoes. The final ascent, 200 feet up a series of metal ladders to the lookout, is not for those with a fear of heights but does offer breath-taking views. Learn how to protect this area. Bring lunch, plenty of water, a light windbreaker for the summit and hiking poles if you have/want them. Drive will be 1.5 hours to trailhead from morning meeting spot. DL.
