Leavitt Peak day hike. Hike up Leavitt Peak, elev 11,569. About 13 miles R/T mostly above the 10,000 foot elevation level on an in and out hike on the PCT. About 2,500 feet of gain for the day. Chickadee Hill above Tahoe Meadows. A pleasant little hike to fantastic view of beautiful Lake Tahoe at nearly 3,000 ft above. Our great little visitors at the easily-reached summit with its natural Granite Bench will be Black-Capped Chickadees and those squawky Western Scrub Jays. Total ascent 400 ft, 3 miles RT. DOK. Return to West Wing. After several miles on scenic jeep road we'll come over a ridge to see "half of California" all at once. We'll follow the narrow Tahoe Rim Trail ridgeline southward over the 10,330 ft Relay Peak summit. We'll continue on its traverse downward to meet the adjoining West Wing ridgeline. There it's OFF-trail to seek the large rocky knob for lunch. Learn about local vegetation. Total ascent 2,200 ft, 12 miles RT. Public Lands Day in the Black Rock. A day of work and a day of play! Assist in clean-up of an old fluorite mine one day. Sunday will probably be a visit to the historic Lassen/Clapper murder site and a possible visit to the remote ghost town of Hardin City. Additional hot springs visit likely. Machado Postpiles day hike in the Carson Pass area. The existence and location of these natural hexagonal basalt columns, similar to, but believed to be millions of years older than the Devils Postpiles near Mammoth were not confirmed until about 1990. Numerous large erratics near beginning of the hike. Learn about the history of the area. About five miles on an in and out with about 800 feet of elevation gain. Not on a trail. ND. Black Rock Desert Hot Springs Tour: Visit a “Leader’s choice” of hot springs. Camp at the “Black Rock” of Emigrant wagon train fame. Likely access to the famous Fly Geyser but at additional cost.
