October 1 (Wednesday) 5:45-7:30 PM
Fast-Paced Conditioning Hike.
Join us on my last after work hike for approximately 1.5 hours, 3-4 miles, and elevation gain of 800 feet in the foothills of the Truckee Meadows. Pace is brisk. Learn about places to hike and some of the flora or fauna we see. Bring water and trail shoes. Optional get-together for dinner afterward. DOK. Leaders: Holly Coughlin and Ridgewalker. October 4-5 (Saturday-Sunday)
Black Rock Desert Hot Springs Tour.
Visit a "Leader's Choice" of hot springs. Camp at the "Black Rock" of Emigrant wagon train fame. Likely access to the famous Fly Geyser, at additional cost. Learn about the Black Rock Desert and expect "dirt camping" with cool nights and temperate days. High clearance 4WD preferable. Carpool. ND. Trip limit 15. Leader: David Book (843-6443). Easy.

October 11 (Saturday) 8:00 AM-4:00PM
Coldstream Valley to Tinker's Knob.
Day hike beginning near Lost Trail Lodge and climbing nearly 2,800 feet to Tinker's Knob; impressive views in all directions. A moderately strenuous 10 miles round-trip. Learn to identify dwarf firs, hemlocks, and whitebark pines. DL. Trip limit 17. Leaders: Ridge Walker (853-8055, edc@unr.edu), Grace Caudill (626-7873). Moderately Strenuous.

October 12 (Sunday) 8:00 AM-4:00 PM
All The Way Up Ophir Creek.
An interesting trail adventure. After the first boulder field, we'll cross the fingers of Ophir Creek and hike through a steep mini-gorge. Passing a "boulder-bombed" lake, we'll closely follow the creek-bed past dense bear-thicket to reach the Tahoe Meadows at 3, 250 feet above our start. Learn about the slide that greatly changed this canyon. Roughly 12 miles RT. DOK. Leaders: Gary Hanneman (425-3742), David von Seggern (303-8461). Moderately Strenuous.

October 15 (Wednesday) 5:30-7:30 PM
Penultimate Evening Conditioning Hike.
Short, but brisk hike off into what remains of the waning twilight in the Reno-Sparks foothills. 1-2 miles, 500 foot gain. Expect to see wildlife and fall colors. DL. Leaders: Ridge Walker (edc@unr.edu) and Karen Todd. Call the hike hotline for details. (473-1445). Easy.

October 18 (Saturday) 8:00 AM-4:00 PM
Mt. Judah.
From the Old Donner Pass we'll hike the PCT in lush foilage and make a semiloop around Mt. Judah with views of many notable landmarks such as Donner Lake, Martis Valley, Castle Peak, and Mt. Lola. 5 miles RT and 1,200 foot of gain. ND. Trip limit 14. Leaders: Grace Caudill (626-7873), Gary Hanneman (425-3742). Moderate.

October 18 (Saturday) 8:00 AM-4:00 PM
Buckland Station south of Silver Springs.
This nearly 12 mile loop hike on flat ground will start at historic Buckland Station, proceed downstream along the Carson River enjoying riparian habitat and fall leaves. Return will be on a segment of the Pony Express Trail route. Learn some history of the area. Option to tour the remains of Fort Churchill on your own after the hike. ND. October 20 (Monday) 6:30-9:00 PM
Outings Meeting.
Join us as we plan and put together outings for December and January. Great months for snowshoe treks and desert hikes. We will meet at Holly's home in east Sparks. Bring a dish to share. October 25 (Saturday) 8:30 AM-4:00 PM
Castle Peak/Basin Peak Bags.
Hike will take in two prominent peaks in the Donner Pass region. Approximately 10 miles RT and 2,000 foot of elevation gain. Pace is moderate. Learn about the topography of the area and some of the flora we encounter. Bad weather will cancel. DOK. Leader: Holly Coughlin (331-7488). Moderately Strenuous.

October 29 (Wednesday) 5:30-7:00 PM
Ultimate Evening Conditioning Hike.
Short, but brisk hike off into the last twilight before daylight savings time ends. In the Reno-Sparks foothills. 1-2 miles, 500 feet elevation gain. Expect to see wildlife and fall colors. DL. Leaders: Ridge Walker, Yvonne, and Karen. Call hike hotline for details (473-1445). Easy.

October 31 (Friday) 8:00 AM-4:00 PM
Nevada Day Hike.
Come celebrate our State holiday with our traditional peak bag of our local landmark, Peavine Mountain. We will probably follow a novel route up the "backside". Ten miles, 3,300 foot of gain. Expect to learn a lot about the diverse habitats we will be climbing through, and if we are lucky, see some migrating mule deer. DL. Trip limit 21.
