New Year's Day Recovery Hike. Moderate two-part Hungry Valley overview. Part I will take us up Hungry Valley Ridge. Part II will be across the valley on Hungry Valley Mountain. We'll learn about this sensitive open-space area, as well as burn off the holiday excesses. About 6-8 miles RT with possible 2,000 foot elevation gain. Late start to accommodate for a late night. Condition Your Mind- Learn Map and Compass. An easy class and short local walk for anyone who needs to learn, practice, or brush up on their map and compass skills. Beginner/brush-up level class for those who want to start hiking on their own or just learn how it's done. Map and compass is the foundation for all outdoor activities! About half an day, some instruction first and then a hands-on, practical demonstration. Possible pizza afterwards. Trip limit 15. Start time

Carson River Railroads near Moundhouse. Day hike of about 10 miles One way with a vehicle shuttle. Elevation gain of less than 1,000 feet. Hike along the scenic Carson River Canyon and learn about two of the Railroads of the Comstock era. Portions of the hike are cross-country. ND. January 19 (Saturday)
Snowshoe Tamarack Peak Ridgeline. Start out on Mt. Rose Trail, but go off-trail with within 1/2 mile. We'll be climbing along and up the ridgeline (the X-country skiers love to jump off this). At 9,900 feet we'll reach the summit for the fabulous views of Lake Tahoe and the three highest peaks surrounding us and have our lunch. We'll descend the same route that we climbed. Plan on snowshoes. Learn about the topography in this area. About 5 miles RT, 1,000 foot elevation.

Full Moon Snowshoe. Depending upon the weather/snow conditions we will snowshoe in an area that allows us to enjoy the light of the full-moon on a winter evening. Learn about the area we go to. Share a little chocolate and port to warm us up inside. Trip will be approximately 4 -5 miles RT with up to 500 feet elevation gain. Really bad weather will unfortunately cancel. DOK. Historic Virginia City flume system on McClellan Peak near CarsonCity. Day hike. The hike will be along a portion of the route of the circa 1870 wooden box flume which brought water from the Carson Range to Virginia City. About 8 miles with less than 800 feet of gain.
