Virginia Mountains Dayhike. Hike to a little known area that I call Hidden Canyon in the Virginia Mountains. This will be a real ramble as we hike on and off trail, through some brush, and into some amazing geologic formations. Hike will be about 8 miles roundtrip (RT) and has 1,200 foot of gain. Carson River Railroads near Moundhouse. Day hike of about 10 miles one way with a vehicle shuttle. Elevation gain of less than 1,000 feet. Hike along the scenic Carson River Canyon and learn about two of the railroads of the Comstock era. Portions of the hike are cross-country. ND. Snowshoe Over Tamarack Peak. Starting at 8,900 feet, we'll snowshoe right up the ridgeline to reach the 9,900 foot summit of Tamarack Peak. This is ski patrol territory. We'll go over the top to the rock outcrop for lunch. Unsurpassed views of Lake Tahoe and 3 nearby peaks. Return by same route. About 5 miles RT and 1,000 foot of gain. DOK. Holiday Party at Patagonia. Patagonia Service Center (8550 White Fir St., Reno) Members, guests, and wannabes are all invited to attend the Great Basin Group holiday party at the Patagonia Outlet in northwest Reno. Located next to the Truckee River, Patagonia has donated their facility for our party this year which promises to be a lot of fun! We will have live music, mixer games, door prizes, awards, and a slide show - all intermingled with good food and conversation. Acoustical guitarist, Jeff Young, will delight us with beautiful melodies throughout the night. Partiers are asked to bring a dish and their beverage of choice (alcoholic beverages are permitted). Pah Rah Range Ramble. A "brisk" December day hike in the Pah Rah Range east of Sparks, up behind Canoe Hill, and out towards the Dry Lakes Valley, where we hope to observe petroglyphs and antelopes. Elevation gain is under 1,000 feet, as we initially gain 500 feet and then head east through rolling valleys. About 10 miles RT. DL.

First Day of Winter. The John C Two Enigma day hike near Dayton. Discover some history of the area as we visit two features associated with old mining operations. One-way hike of about 7 miles with a vehicle shuttle. Elevation gain of about 1,000 feet for the day. Scenic views. Return paralleling part of the Carson River. ND. Beginner's Cross-Country Ski Lesson. We'll take a short jaunt up to the Mt. Rose Meadows, for new beginners to learn the art of "hiking on skis". Experienced leaders will do the instruction. Participants must bring their own ski equipment. 1-2 miles, less than 100 feet of elevation gain. Expect to enjoy the natural beauty of the Mt. Rose Pass area. ND. Snowshoe to Tamarack Palisades. Unusual short hike. We'll snowshoe totally off-trail somewhat north of Tamarack Lake to ascend 400-600 feet through irregular forest. Soon we'll find ourselves on top of a high ridge between a wall of large vertical granite falling away several hundred feet on on side and steep snow slopes on the other. Return same way.
