Donations For Outings -Thanks for All Your Contributions!

The Great Basin Group's Outing Leaders are collecting $1 donations from all members on outings ($2 for non-members). These contributions will greatly help to enhance our Outings Program by providing leaders with more training opportunities, provide new first aid kits to all leaders, and help offset the cost of our bi-monthly Outings Meetings. Any extra funds may be used to help finance the cost of our Program Meetings at Bartley Ranch.
Our Outings Leaders provide a variety of outings in our effort to meet the needs our membership. They are all volunteers who endeavor to share their love and knowledge of the outdoors in the amazing country around us. Your donations will provide essential support to the Great Basin Group's Outing Program and will be greatly appreciated.

 

September 2 (Sunday )
Thunder Mountain near Carson Pass. Dayhike. About nine miles with about 2,000 feet of elevation gain on an in and out hike. Scenic views on an established trail mostly on a ridge line. Learn some history about the area. ND. Leaders: T A Taro (775-530-2935), Donna Inversin (775-882-0105). Moderate.

September 4 (Tuesday)
Tuesday Night Slow-Paced Conditioning Hikes – every Tuesday night. We will hike about 2 hours (5:30-7:30) covering 3-4 miles, with minimal to moderate elevation gain in the parks and foothills of the Reno-Sparks area. Learn about new places to hike and protect. DL. September 5 (Wednesday)
Fast-Paced Conditioning Hike. Explore the foothills of the Truckee Meadows after work. Hike from 5:30 to 7:30, about 4 miles, with up to 1,000 foot of elevation gain possible. Call the Monday before the hike between 8:00 am and 8:00 pm for a recorded message. Bring plenty of water and trail shoes. September 6 (Thursday)
Evening Conditioning Hike. Brisk hike off into the twilight in the foothills surrounding Reno-Sparks. Meet at 5:30 PM. Hike 2-4 miles, 1000 feet elevation gain. September 8 (Saturday)
Gourmet Dayhike. Here's a rare opportunity to go for a hike, share gourmet food, and perhaps take a cool dip in a Sierra lake. Meet 9:00 AM. The hike will be about 4-6 miles roundtrip and possibly up to 800 feet of elevation gain. Our destination will be determined the week before the outing to give us a little flexibility. Participants all bring a creative dish to share. Learn Leave-no-Trace skills and get some great ideas for foods that can be carried in. Trip limit 14. DL. September 8 (Saturday)           
Freel Peak (10,881') Scenic climb to the highest peak in the Carson Range, along the TRT from Horse Meadows. Mostly on trail, but final 1,000 feet to summit is open x-country. Learn about high-altitude flora, as we enjoy its beauty. About 12 mi., 2000-ft elev. gain. Moderately Strenuous. DL Leaders: Ridge Walker (853-8055; edc@unr.edu), Gracie Caudill, (626-7873).

September 8 (Saturday)
Hike Mount Lola. Enjoy climbing the Highest Peak north of Lake Tahoe. See Mt . Lassen and possibly Mt. Shasta. Great views of Independence Lake. Learn about fall foliage. Leader: Glenn Polochko (530-587-5906, gpolochko@yahoo.com). Intermediate.

September 9 (Sunday)
Machado Postpiles Dayhike in the Carson Pass area. The existence andlocation of these natural hexagonal basalt columns, similar to, but believed to be millions of years older than the Devils Postpiles nearMammoth were not confirmed until about 1990. Numerous large erratics near beginning of the hike. About five miles on an in and out with about 800 feet of elevation gain. Not on a trail. ND. September 10 (Monday)
ExCom Meeting. The Great Basin Board will meet to discuss local issues and listen to chair reports from each member. Meeting begins promptly at 6:30 PM. Call Holly at 331-7488 for information.

GB Group general meeting. Beyond the glittering casinos of Las Vegas and Reno lies a magnificent land of untouched wild beauty. The movie Wild Secrets of Nevada explores many of these extraordinary Nevada places that so many people in the Sierra Club and other organizations are working so hard to save.  Location: Bartley Ranch (South on Lakeside Dr., just before Windy Hill). September 15 (Saturday)
Leavitt Peak day hike. Hike up Leavitt Peak, which is a bit over 11,500 feet high. About 13 miles mostly above the 10,000 foot elevation level on an in and out hike. About 2,500 feet of gain for the day. Learn somehistory of the area. Hikers should be experienced and conditioned. ND. Leaders: T A Taro (775-530-2935), Donna Inversin (775-882-0105). Strenuous.

September 15 (Saturday)
Verdi Pond Trail Building. Since we use the trails, we thought we'd help build one close to home.  The Great Basin Group will be helping the Truckee Meadows Trails Assoc. and Washoe County Parks make a loop trail along the Truckee River in Verdi. TMTA will supply all tools and supplies for trail construction. Volunteers should bring water, suncreen, gloves, and a hat. Lunch will be provided. Please RSVP to Valerie Andersen at 828-0302 or email her at mtnval@sbcglobal.net so we have enough food and the correct number of tools.  We will meet at Crystal Peak Park at 8:30 am. Easy.

September 16 (Sunday)
Tamarack Peak from Waterfall. 9:00 AM Start. First we'll hike the excellent new segment of the Tahoe Rim Trail to the well-known waterfall in sight of Mt Rose. But then we'll turn sharp left off-trail to ascend 700 ft across a steep slope to reach the large rock outcrop for lunch. Next we hike right over the 9900 ft summit, remaining off-trail as we descend along a ridge to complete this loop hike. Total 1300 ft ascent, 6 miles RT. Learn about vegetation in the area. DOK. Day hike to the tops of three peaks each over 10,000 feet high. Just south of Lake Tahoe are Freel, Jobs Sister and Jobs peaks; we will ascend all three in one day. About 10 miles in a loop; about 4,400 feet of elevation gain. Learn some history of the area. Experienced, and conditioned hikers only on this fast-paced event. ND. Leader: T A Taro 775-530-2935. September 22 (Saturday)
Last Day of Summer Mt. Rose Dayhike. This is a wonderful local dayhike that offers fantastic scenery of the surrounding valleys. Meet 9:00 a.m.The hike is 10 miles roundtrip, with an elevation gain of over 2,400 feet. We will take the newer route, which I think is very picturesque. Learn about some of the flora or fauna along our journey. This is a hike for experienced, fit hikers only. Call for information regarding when and where we will meet. Trip limit of 16. DOK. Tahoe Meadows Easy Dayhike. If you are looking for a day hike with an easy, stop and smell (and identify) all the flowers,kind of pace, this will be a great hike for you. Geared for families with children and older people who are young-at-heart. Meet 9:00 a.m.The hike will be under four miles round-trip and have little elevation gain. DL. Boundary Peak Service Trip
Celebrate National Public Lands Day by working near Nevada's highest peak in the White Mountain Range to restore the Trail Canyon trail. Friends of the Inyo will be there, as well as Friends of Nevada Wilderness. Carpooling options will be available. Please contact Angie Dykema with F.N.W. at 324-7667, for more details. National Public Lands Day in the Black Rock. Service Trip & Overnight Car Camp. Spend the weekend in the companyof BLM volunteers, friends of the Black Rock and other volunteers in the Black Rock area. Learn about the Black Rock. Near Full Moon will complement the trip. DL.
