New Year's Day Recovery Hike. Leader's choice for a moderately easy hike in the Reno area. Start time is 10 AM to accommodate late-night revelers. Shake it off, come with us, and start the new year with a brisk and healthy ramble. We'll discuss winter impacts in the high desert environment. January 7 (Sunday)
Virginia & Truckee Rail Road. Hike a portion of the scenic V & T right of way before the tracks are re-laid. Learn about the history of the area. Hike is about 10 miles and all downhill. Vehicle shuttle will be necessary. ND. Leader: T A Taro (530-2935). Moderate.
January 11 (Thursday)
Great Basin Group Program Meeting. "An Inconvenient Truth", Al Gore's epic film about global warming has been showing in movie theaters all over the country. For those of you who haven't seen this movie or for those of us wanting to see it again, tonight's screening will be an excellent opportunity to remind ourselves of what is happening to our planet and what we can do about it. Due to the length of the movie we will be starting a little earlier than usual. Location: Bartley Ranch (South on Lakeside Dr., to the east just before Windy Hill). Echo Lake Cross Country Ski. Cross Country ski to the glaciated basin of Echo Lakes. Easy to moderate ski over the hill and through the woods and across the lake. Learn the geologic history and hear the "echo". Trip is about 6-8 miles, about 500 ft. of elevation gain. ND. Leader: Ridge Walker (853-8055, edc@unr.edu). Moderate.
January 14 (Sunday)
Western Ridge of Peavine Mountain. Snowshoe (if snow) or off-trail hike. Climb western-most slopes of Peavine Mountain up to the ridgeline for full vistas to both north and south. Roughly 800 ft. elevation gain from the north slope and 5 miles RT. Learn about a new area to hike or snowshoe and view the impacts that urban sprawl is having even in areas that seem remote. DOK. Snowshoe Chickadee Ridge. Snowshoe from the Tahoe Meadows to Chickadee Ridge. Fantastic views of Tahoe and the surrounding peaks. Learn about the little birds that we enjoy sighting so much. El Dorado Canyon Dayhike. Explore El Dorado Canyon to the natural arch formations. Year round stream; varied rock formations. Learn about the history of the area. Hike is about 10 miles, under 1,000 ft. of gain. ND. Leader: T A Taro (530-2935). Moderate.
January 27 (Saturday)
Spooner Summit Snowshoe. Snowshoe on the Tahoe Rim Trail (TRT) from Spooner Summit to the north. We'll snowshoe about 5-6 miles RT and have about 800 ft. of elevation gain.
