September 2006 Outings Schedule

 
Join the fun! The 100 Mile Summer is here!
Get an entry card from any one of our Outings Leaders to participate in the 100 Mile Summer.
All you have to do is fill in the date, outing title, and miles. As you participate on outings from June 1 - September 24 have your leader sign the card and count up your miles. Only official Sierra Club Outings are eligible, including all the conditioning hikes. On October 14, all members who completed 100 miles or more are encouraged to join us for a celebration in remembrance of our summer journeys. This is going to be a great party! In December, we will print the names of all the participants who hiked 100 miles or more in the Trails and on our Web site. So don't miss out, get your card and start counting up your miles.
 

September 2-4 (Saturday-Monday)
Labor Day Get-Away Backpack.
This backpack will be geared for beginners and experienced packers. Beginners will need to call me by Aug. 27th to attend a get-together to learn the basics of equipment and necessary items needed. The backpack will be about 3-4 miles in with possibly 800-1,000 ft. gain. Must be a conditioned hiker. DOK. Leader: Holly Coughlin (331-7488). Moderate.

September 2-4 (Saturday-Monday)
Burn in the Black Rock.
Buy your own ticket and meet fellow Sierra Clubbers at the Burning Man. Bring your bike! Learn about local flora and fauna from a BLM volunteer and possibly assist with the monitoring of the event. Camp location/coordinates posted outside the event, plan to arrive 9/1 or 9/2. ND. For details contact David Book (843-6443).

September 5 (Tuesday)
Easy Paced Conditioning Hike.
Hike About 3-4 mi., with moderate gain of less than 1,000 ft., for two hours after work. Hike in the foothills or parks in the Truckee Meadows. Discuss flora or fauna of area. DOK on leash. September 6 (Wednesday)
Fast Paced Conditioning Hike.
Hike about 4-5 mi., with about 1,000 ft. gain for two hours somewhere in the hills surrounding the Truckee Meadows. Learn about flora, fauna or history of the area. Call for recorded message with details for directions starting on Monday before the hike. DOK. Leader:  Holly Coughlin (331-7488). Moderate.

Sept. 6 (Wednesday)
Day hike along Tahoe Ridge Trail.
Martis Peak to Rifle Peak and Rose Knob, maybe Gray Lake. Stops for flowers and views. 10 miles, 1500ft elevation gain. Bring lunch, water and dress in layers. Leader: Gwen Rosser ( 530-546-7548, grosser@aaahawk.com). Moderate

September 7 (Thursday)
Condition Your Mind and Body
. Condition your mind with a beginning Map and Compass Class and your body with an easy, local conditioning hike. Together these will provide practical experience with your new map and compass skills, all in the cool of the evening. Possible pizza party afterwards. Oh, and learn about the flora and fauna in the area, too! Trip limit 12. DOK. Leader: David Book (843-6443). Easy.

Sept. 9 (Saturday)
Pacific Crest Trail from Weber Lake to Paradise Lake.
A seldom hiked section of the Pacific Crest Trail. Very interesting rock formations and remote meadows that is not often seen. Lunch at beautiful Paradise Lake. Learn about birds on that section of trails. 1500’ elevation gain and about ten miles. DOK. Leader: Glenn Polochko (530-587-5906, gpolochko@yahoo.com). Moderate

September 9 (Saturday)
Gourmet Hike.
This has become an annual, favorite event (if you like good food). We'll hike to a nice, quiet lake and spread out our feast. Plan on a cool dip if temperatures permit. Learn about a great place to go for a fairy easy hike and the flora on the way. Great photo opportunities, too. Hike will be about 5-6 miles total and no more than 600 ft. gain. Trip limit 16. September 10 (Sunday)
Thunder Mountain.
Kirkwood area off Hwy 88. Learn about the early history of this area. In and out hike to Thunder Mountain along ridges/established trails. Hike is about 9 miles and has about 2,000 ft. elevation gain. Bad weather will cancel. ND. Leader: T A Taro (775-530-2935). Moderately Strenuous.

September 10 (Sunday)
Martis Peak.
Join the Sierra Club for this fantastic trip to the Martis Peak fire lookout. Enjoy a 360º view. We'll evaluate the fantastic recovery of this area since the fire, all the new growth and different varieties of vegetation in the area. This is a 9 mile, 1,800 ft. gain trip for advanced/intermediate hikers. We'll make a loop by Brockway Summit on the way back. DL. Leader: Grace Blaylock (846-2758). Moderately Strenuous.

Sept. 12 (Tuesday Evening)
Hike East Truckee Area.
Hike in the mountains east of Truckee, from 6-ish until dark.3-5 miles, 500-700' elevation gain. Optional BBQ on Sally's back porch afterwards. Hiking boots, water, and windbreakers recommended. DOK. Leader: Sally Lyon (530-582-4943, sally@mytahoevacation.com). Moderate.

September 14 (Thursday)
GB Group general meeting.
Sustainable eating and cattle ranching are the focus of this evening’s slide presentation by Preston Wright, of the Nevada Cattleman’s Association. (See accompanying article by Philip Moore in this issue of the Trails.) The Sierra Club and cattle ranchers have occasionally found themselves at odds with one another in Nevada. But, you might be surprised that we have a lot in common...for example, we’re all conservationists! Come hear Preston’s views on our shared values along with a discussion of his belief that the emerging science of “complexity,” the study of whole, complexly interacting communities and systems, holds the future of natural resource science. Freel, Jobs, and Jobs Sister Peaks.
Bag three 10,000 foot peaks south of Lake Tahoe. Learn about the history of the area. High clearance vehicles with 4WD needed. Hike is about 10 miles and has around 4,400 feet of elevation gain (whew!!!). ND. Leader: T A Taro (775-530-2935). Strenuous.

September 16-17 (Saturday-Sunday)
Leavitt Lake-Sonora Pass Carcamp.
Hike near Leavitt Lake and Latopie Lake on and off the PCT. Carcamp in the area. 4WD vehicles needed for drive into Leavitt Lake. This is a beautiful glacial bowl in the proposed addition to the Hoover Wilderness. Some discussion concerning this issue. Fantastic views and photo opportunities. HIke will be between 5-8 miles and have over 1,000 ft. gain. DL. Leader: Jackie Stroud (267-9522). Moderate.

September 17 (Sunday)
Mount Rose Hike.
Join the Sierra Club on this hike to the Mount Rose Summit at 10,776 feet. We'll start at the new trail head and will observe the alpine flora through several altitude zones. This time of year we should be able to observe change in color of tree leaves and from the area of the windswept summit we'll observe the granite backbone of the Carson Range. This is 10 miles and 1,800 foot gain. DL. Leader: Grace Blaylock (846-2758). Moderately Strenuous.

Mt. Elwell Loop.
Fantastic trek that will take us by six mountain lakes as we work our way toward Mt.Elwell at 7,812ft. Learn about the topography history and flora of this region. Approx 8 miles, 1,800 elevation gain. DL. Leader: Gwen Rosser ( 530-546-7548, grosser@aaahawk.com). Moderate

September 23 (Saturday)
Leavitt Peak Sonora Pass.
Hike along a scenic portion of the PCT and up to 11,570 foot Leavitt Peak. Learn about history of the area. Hike is about 13 miles, mostly above 10,000 foot, and 2,500 foot elevation gain. Storms cancel. ND. Leader: T A Taro (775-530-2935). Strenuous.

Meeks Bay to Lake Geneviere/Crag Lake

September 28 (Thursday)
Carson City SC Program.
7 p.m., Carson City Library. Slide show guided tour of the tributaries of Lake Tahoe by Timothy Rowe, USGS hydrologist. Scenic and detailed views of the valleys and slopes that surround Lake Tahoe with explanation of how nature and development affect erosion and water quality. Call 882-9441 for information.

September 29 - October 1(Friday - Sunday)
National Public Lands Day/Black Rock Desert.
The Great Basin Group will be teaming up with BLM and other user groups in this season's final volunteer trip. This year's event will take place at Steve's Camp near the entrance of historic High Rock Canyon. We will be making a walking trail in Little High Rock, beefing up the road closure barrier, installing a kiosk with information and whatever else needs to be done. Saturday night we will have a potluck dinner and the merriment usually lasts long into the night. If you want to explore the Black Rock or want to do something for our Public Lands this is your chance. There is a job for persons of all abilities. We will work on Saturday and spend Sunday hiking and exploring. Participants are responsible for their own gear, food, and water. High clearance vehicles with good tires and a good spare are a must. Leader's Choice Dayhike.
