October 1 (Sunday)
Tamarack Peak to Rock Outcrop. Off trail to the 9,900 ft. summit of Tamarack Peak and it's dramatic agglomerated rock outcrop just to the west. Panoramic views of Tahoe and Mt. Rose. Descend to the rocky waterfall for return on trail. Learn about geography of the area. About 6 miles roundtrip and 1,400 ft. elevation gain. ND. Leader: Gary Hanneman (746-0771). October 3 (Tuesday)
Easy-Paced Conditioning Hike. About 3-4 miles, moderate gain, under 1,000 ft., for 2 hours after work. Hike in the foothills, parks around the Truckee Meadows. Discuss flora, fauna. DOK on leash. For directions call for recorded message.   Leaders: Kim (338-0221), Nancy (359-4920). Easy.

October 4 (Wednesday)
Holly's Last Fast-Paced Conditioning Hike. About 4-5 miles, possible 1,000 ft. gain, for 2 hours after work somewhere in the hills around the Truckee Meadows. Learn about flora, fauna, or history. Bring water, trail shoes, windbreaker. Directions: call for recorded message starting on the Monday before the hike. DOK. Leader: Holly (331-7488). Moderate.

October 5 (Thursday)
Pre-fall (Waxing) Moon over Reno. Hike and watch the October moon rise over Reno. Meet at 6:00 P.M., 3-4 miles. Listen for coyotes and learn about them as predators or contributors to the natural balance of nature. Trip Limit: 12. October 7 (Saturday)
Spooner Lake Loop Toddler Hike. Hike on an easy 1.8 mile loop trail with no elevation gain and beautiful scenery for toddlers and their families. Interpretive signs describe the flora and fauna. October 7 (Saturday)
Stanislaus Peak at 11,233 ft. Peak bag of Stanislaus Peak located five miles NW of Sonora Pass. Hike is apx. 10 miles and 2,000 ft. elevation gain. 80% on trail, with the final assault across loose volcanic scree (class 2). Learn about and love high alpine trees an flora. DL. October 7 (Saturday). Lunch at noon at Nikki's Chaat Cafe' (Indian Restaurant, reasonable prices) 3469 S. Lake Tahoe Blvd. South Lake Tahoe (near Long's Drugs and Heidi's). Then ice-skating (indoors) at South Lake Tahoe Ice Arena. Afternoon session 1-5 P.M. $7.50 skating + $2 skate rental. Special group rate (12 or more people pay together) of $6.50 includes skate rental. ND unless they can ice-skate. Leader: Richard Arbib (685-2600).

October 8 (Sunday)
The Beach along Tahoe's Rim Trail. A six mile piece of the famous Rim Trail going south from Spooner Summit to a moving target- "The Beach". We'll reach a marvelous panorama of world famous Lake Tahoe near Genoa Peak. Trip is about 12 miles RT and 1,600 ft. elevation gain. ND. Leader: Gary Hanneman (746-0771). Moderately Strenuous.

October 8 (Sunday)
Machado Postpiles. The Machado Postpiles, near Carson Pass, are believed to have been formed prior to the Sierra Nevada Range which surrounds them. The existence and location of this naturally occurring hexagonal basalt column collection, similar to and millions of years older than even the Devil's Postpile near Mammoth, was not confirmed until 1990. Learn more about the history of this area by joining me. Hike is apx. 5 miles, and under 800 feet elevation gain. ND. Leader: T A Taro (530-2935). Moderately easy.

October 10 (Tuesday)

October 12 (Thursday)
GB Group general meeting. Join us for the biennial Candidate's Night presented by the Great Basin Group of the Sierra Club. We will have many local and state candidates on hand to present their views on how best to meet the environmental needs of our region and state. Chip Latham again will be the moderator for the evening and promises to keep everyone on time and on their toes with his entertaining dry wit. October 14 (Saturday)
Disaster Creek. Explore the Carson-Iceberg Wilderness.   Hike the loop from Highland Lakes down Disaster Creek, up Paradise Valley, and return along the Pacific Crest Trail. Hike is 14 miles and 1,500 foot gain elevation. Learn what the disaster was and how to overcome it. DL. Leaders: Ridge Walker (853-8055, edc@unr.edu), Dan Tyma (883-4151). Moderately Strenuous.

October 14 (Saturday)
100 Mile Summer. Celebrating our Miles!!! Come celebrate with our hikers who completed 100 or more miles this summer. We will have a surprise video show with members on our trips, meaning possibly YOU! We will have a huge pot of spaghetti and garlic bread. Slow-Paced Fall Hike. Join me on a hike that will be slow for all abilities. Parents with children are welcome. About 4 miles and little elevation gain. Fall colors should be beautiful. October 15 (Sunday)
Relay Peak past Waterfall. Climb Relay Peak at 10,400 ft. and it's historic short ski lift. By way of the rocky waterfall within good view of majestic Mt. Rose. About 10 miles RT and 1,900 ft. elevation gain. Learn about hiking in this area. ND. Leader: Gary Hanneman (746-0771). Moderately Strenuous.

October 15 (Sunday)
Spooner Summit to Snow Valley Peak. Note date change. Spooner Summit up North Canyon to Marlette Lake, returning via Snow Valley Peak and Tahoe Rim Trail. Learn some of the history of this area. Hike is about 14 miles, 2,000 ft. elevation gain. ND. Leader: T A Taro (530-2935). Moderate.

October 17 Tuesday)

October 21(Saturday)
Afternoon Hike in North Valleys
. Take a hike out of the Cold Springs area to a ridge that offers views of the North Valleys. Hike will be about 4-5 miles and have 1,000 ft. of gain. We will only be out about 3 hours maximum. Nevada fall colors should be great. Learn about local flora. DOK.

October 21 (Saturday)
Sierra Club's film Oil on Ice.
This is an outstanding film that documents the impact of opening up Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to oil drilling and how the land, people, and wildlife of that region will be undermined. Guaranteed to provide a new understanding of what we are constantly fighting battles in Congress to save. Join us for an evening showing around 7:00 pm, at a private home. October 22 (Sunday)
Buckland Station. Note date change. From Historic Buckland Station, hike downstream along the lower Carson River enjoying the riparian habitat. Return on segment of Pony Express Trail route. Learn some history of the area. Option to tour Fort Churchill on your own after the hike. Hike is apx. 7 miles and under 100 feet of gain. Hike is easy, however there are miles of soft sand. ND. October 22 (Sunday)
Genoa Peak from the East. We'll take Snowshoe Thompson's route up the TRT. We'll learn about Thompson's life and exploits and visit his gravesite. Fall color still probable. Hike will have an elevation gain of 4,000 foot and trip length of 12 miles. Well-conditioned hikers only. DL. Leader: David Von Seggern (303-8461). Strenuous.

October 23 (Monday)
Outings Meeting. All leaders, co-leaders or others interested in outings are encouraged to attend our meeting to plan for December-January. Learn about requirements to lead trips. Meet about 6:30 pm, at Cathy Schmidt's home, until schedule is full. Opportunities to lead hikes, bike rides, snowshoeing, x-country ski trips. Beverages provided. Please bring dish to share. October 25 (Wednesday)
Fall Colors Evening Hike. Final evening conditioning hike of the season before the end of daylight time. Brisk hike into one of the aspen-laden creeks of the Sierra foothills 2-4 miles and up to 1,000 ft. gain. Learn a few new trees! DL. October 29 (Saturday)
Mt. Rose Dayhike. This outing will start on the new Mt. Rose Trail which narrows the length of the hike to 10 miles, but we still have over 2,000 ft. of gain. Our pace will be brisk or energetic with only two planned breaks along the trail. If you like faster-paced, longer distance hikes, you'll enjoy going with us. Fall colors should be outstanding. Learn about the Mount Rose Wilderness and efforts to help regulate snowmobile activity. Trip limit 14. DL. Leaders: Holly (331-7488), Sherrie (852-5108). Moderately Strenuous.

October 28-29 (Saturday-Sunday)
Hot Springs & Cold Nights. Soak in a hot spring and camp out under near-dark skies...Great Stars! Learn about the Black Rock area and Gerlach's natural history. Visit a local art studio and see the site of the cancelled Sempra Power Plant. Possible dinner in Gerlach. Bad weather cancels. Must call before 10/26. DL.   Leader: David Book (843-6443). Easy.
