GB Group general meeting.
This evening we will have Dave Hess and/or others from REI. Dave's presentation of snowshoeing equipment last year was such a success we've decided to do it again! This year the emphasis will be more on clothing and how to stay comfortable during winter activities in all different conditions. We may also have a surprise slide show to get everyone in the mood for winter outdoor recreation. Come and be inspired! Location: Bartley Ranch (South onLakeside Dr., just before Windy Hill). November 4 (Saturday)
Huffaker Hills Toddler Hike. Easy 1.5 mile trail with small, rolling hills and great views of the valley and the Sierra. There are also interpretive panels about the flora, fauna and natural history. DOK on leash. Leader: Laura Brigham (786-7497). Easy.

November 4 (Saturday)
Pickett Peak-Hawkins Peak. Double peak bag on the ridge SE of Pickett's Junction. Pickett's Peak (9,118 ft.) and Hawkins Peak (10,023 ft.). Hike is apx. 9 miles and has 1,800 ft. of elevation gain. Explore and learn the difference between forests of lodge pole, western white pine, red fir, and white bark pine. DL. Leaders: Ridge Walker (853-8055, edc@unr.edu), Kurt Kuznicki (745-3119). Moderately Strenuous.

November 5 (Sunday)
Petroglyphs near Reno. Petroglyphs near Reno is a Leader's Choice hike of about 5 miles and less than 500 ft. of elevation gain. Learn about the mysteries of how former residents viewed nature. DL. Leader: Dorthy Hudig (323-4835, hudig@med.unr.edu). Easy.

November 11 (Saturday)
Lava Beds/Pershing County. Join us as we walk in the Lava Beds Museum of Granite Sculpture. Lava Beds is a beautiful place filled with amazing rock formations and dotted with springs. Wildlife opportunities abound. Learn how you can protect this great place. Hike info: Early start due to drive, gas money for drivers, dress in layers, 6-8 miles and 1,000 ft. gain, easy steady pace, cross country/game trails. All day event. DL. November 12 (Sunday)
El Dorado Canyon near Dayton. Hike along riparian habitat of El Dorado Canyon with its year-round stream. Lunch at the natural arches. Learn some history of the area. Hike is about 12 miles and has under 1,000 ft. of elevation gain. ND. Leader: T A Taro (530-2935). Moderate.

November 18 (Saturday)
Wilderness First Aid for Outings Leaders. The Great Basin Group has put together a wilderness first aid training for all leaders and leaders in training. The training will focus on the types of first aid most often needed in the back-country. All participants will receive a complete medical kit. The class will draw upon the experience and medical advice of one of our members who is a doctor and Grace's two-day wilderness training. There is no cost to Sierra Club members who lead trips. Also, lunch will be provided for all participants. Our training will take place at Claire Tappan Lodge above Truckee. We will work out ride sharing. Call for details and to confirm your attendance. November 19 (Sunday)
Holly's Choice Dayhike. Hike in a scenic area located close to the Truckee Meadows. Weather will determine destination. Learn about flora, fauna or history of the area. Fall colors should still touch the landscape. Hike will be about 6-8 miles and may have 1,000 ft. elevation gain or more. DL, but chocolate and port are okay. November 23 (Thursday)
4th Annual Turkey Hike. If you are looking for something more than football and parades on Thanksgiving Day come on out and strut your stuff as we hike before the big Thanksgiving meal. Learn some local history and what's happening with Nevada Wilderness. The hike will be about a two hour jaunt somewhere in the Truckee Meadows. Our hike will begin at 9:00 am sharp. About 2-4 miles, 1,500 ft. gain (more or less). DOK. No Turkeys. Leaders: Kurt Kuznicki (745-3119), Tom Birdley (745-3119). Moderate.

November 24 (Friday)
OH My Gosh. I ATE Too Much Hike!!! Join me as I waddle through the Huffaker Hills for an hour or so to work off some of the Thanksgiving Dinner. Learn what's happening with Nevada Wilderness. Hike info: easy trail, easy pace, great views of Reno and Carson Range. About 2-3 miles, 200 ft. gain. Optional hike up to the top of Rattlesnake Mountain. DOK with leash. November 25 (Saturday)
Last Chance Black Rock Trip. This will be my last Black Rock NCA trip of the year. Join me as I head to the hills and either hike up Granite Basin or hike in the Calico Wilderness, depending upon conditions. Learn about the 10 Wilderness Areas in the Black Rock. Hike info: Early start due to drive, gas money for drivers, dress in layers, 6-8 miles and 1,500 ft. gain, easy, but steady pace, cross country/game trails. All day event. DL. November 26 (Sunday)
Historic Virginia City Flume System on McClellan Peak. Hike along portion of the circa 1870 wood box flume which brought water from the Carson Range to Virginia City. Learn about some history of the area. Hike will be 14 miles and have 1,500 ft. gain. ND. Leader: T A Taro (530-2935). Moderate.
