MAY 2 (TUESDAY)
Tuesday Night Slow-Paced Conditioning Hikes. We will be doing weekly Tuesday night, slow-paced conditioning hikes throughout the spring & summer. We will hike 3-4 miles, with minimal to moderate elevation gain, in the parks & foothills of the Reno-Sparks area. We will hike for approximately 2 hours & discuss flora & fauna of the area. DL. Wednesday Evening Conditioning Hike. Fast-paced hike after work in the hills surrounding the Truckee Meadows. Get in shape for summer outings. All hikes appx. 4 miles, 1,000 ft. elevation gain. Learn about flora or fauna on these outings that visit different sites. Bring water, windbreaker, trail shoes. DOK. MAY 5-7 (WEEKEND)
Black Rock Rendezvous. Join the Great Basin Group as we team up with other conservation and user groups for a weekend of fun, workshops, and adventure in the Black Rock High Rock NCA. We will head up to Gerlach Friday night and camp. Saturday we will take part in the Black Rock Rendezvous for a series of workshops on a variety of subjects such as Geology of the Black Rock, Driving Safely in the NCA, Leave No Trace, and more. We will also receive training on staffing the Gerlach Visitor Trailer for later volunteer opportunities. Sunday you can participate in a volunteer project or join me on a hike to one of the Black Rocks' Wilderness Areas. Join us for the entire weekend or just for one of the two days. Hike will be moderately easy, 5-6 miles, 1,000' to 1,500' elevation gain. DL. Participants are responsible, gear and supplies. High clearance vehicle with good tires recommended for transportation to the hike. Possibility of carpool (gas money for drivers). See Schedule (PDF). MAY 6 (SATURDAY)
Virginia Mountains. Join us on a moderately-paced hike in the Virginia Mountains southwest of Pyramid Lake. Learn about our efforts to protect this area. Hike will be appx. 6-8 miles with 1,800' elevation gain. Fantastic views and extraordinary rock features. DL. Trip limit 16. MAY 6 (SATURDAY)
Toddler Hike - Galina Creek Park. Family-oriented, easy-paced outing for members with young children or anyone looking for a slower pace. Learn about local flora and fauna in Galina Creek Park. DL. Leader: Vicki Toy-Smith (826-0932), Co-Leader: Laura Brigham (786-7497).

MAY 7 (SUNDAY)
Virginia and Truckee Railroad. Hike a portion of the scenic V & T right-of-way before tracks are relaid. Learn about the history of this area. Call in advance as a vehicle shuttle will be necessary. The distance will be about 10 miles, all downhill. ND. Leader: T A Taro (530-2935). Moderate.

Moderate Conditioning Hike. Moderate conditioning hike with some steep climbing in a beautiful canyon with red rock formations in Hidden Valley Park. Depart at 5:45. From South McCarran Blvd go East on Pembroke. Turn right on Parkway Drive. Proceed to Hidden Valley Park. Travel to the end of the road and park near restrooms on the left. Hike for 2 hours. Environmental Literature. Meet with the environmental literature discussion group (aka armchair outings)
at 7:30 PM. This meeting will feature Professor Michael Branch, UNR. He will be leading a discussion on his new book "Reading the Roots", available at bookstores and online. Call David (323-4835) for details.

May 11 (THURSDAY)

Program Meeting. Ansel Adams: A Documentary Film is an elegant, moving and lyrical portrait of this most eloquent and quintessentially American of photographers. Written and directed by Ric Burns, and produced by Steeplechase Films and Sierra Club Productions, it explores the meaning and legacy of Adams's life and work within the context of the great themes that absorbed him throughout his career: the beauty and fragility of "the American earth," the inseparable bond of man and nature, and the moral obligation our present owes to the future. This film runs 90 minutes so we will start announcements at 7:00 and the film at 7:15. Location: Bartley Ranch (South on Lakeside Dr., just before Windy Hill). MAY 13 (SATURDAY)
Clark Mountain. Peak Bag of Clark Mountain (7400') at the North end of the Virginia Range, South of the Truckee River near Tracy. Mostly a road walk, except for the final 500' scramble to summit. MAY 14 (SUNDAY)
McKissick Canyon. Hike up the grade of this canyon leading to near the top of Dogskin Mountain in Winnemucca Valley. Views 2,300' above the Winnemucca Ranch property where new suburban development is threatened. Seven miles round-trip and 2,100' elevation gain. Learn about potential threats to wilderness areas. Kayak Lake Lahonton. Kayak along the shore of Lahonton. We'll visit some rare petroglyphs, and hopefully observe some Bald Eagles that nest near the lake. Call for details. ND. Leader: Holly Coughlin (331-7488).

Lower Carson River Dayhike. Hike along the lower Carson River through extensive cottonwood groves. Witness evidence of past beaver activity, abandoned mining operations, and part of the Pony Express Trail. Learn about the history of the area. Apx. 6 miles, under 500 ft. gain, but partly on soft sand. ND.  Leader: T A Taro (530-2935).  Easy.

MAY 27-29 (SAT-SUN-MON)
Black Rock Photo Trip. We will be photographing in the general Black Rock / High Rock conservation area. Learn digital and film landscape photography.
