Join the fun! The 100 Mile Summer is here!
Get an entry card from any one of our Outings Leaders to participate in the 100 Mile Summer.
All you have to do is fill in the date, outing title, and miles. As you participate on outings from June 1 - September 24 have your leader sign the card and count up your miles. Only official Sierra Club Outings are eligible, including all the conditioning hikes. On October 14, all members who completed 100 miles or more are encouraged to join us for a celebration in remembrance of our summer journeys. This is going to be a great party! In December, we will print the names of all the participants who hiked 100 miles or more in the Trails and on our Web site. So don't miss out, get your card and start counting up your miles.
 

June 3 (Saturday)
Steven's Trail.
Learn about old mining area near Colfax on the North Fork of the American River. Wild flowers might still be abundant this time of year. Fantastic view of the river. Moderate hike at 8 mi., with 1,000 gain and loss. Rough, cold swimming, but pretty accommodating for wading in the right spots. ND. Leader: Craig Mastos (786-7742). Moderate.

June 3 (Saturday)
Toddler Hike at Davis Creek Park.
Easy paced stroll amongst the pine trees. Learn how to tell the difference between a Jeffrey and a Ponderosa. Families encouraged or anyone looking for an easy hike. Apx. 2-3 miles, little elevation gain. DOK on leash. Leader: Laura Brigham (786-7497), Co-leader: Grace Blaylock (677-9257). Easy.

June 2-3 (Friday/Saturday)
Black Rock Desert Volunteer Opportunity.
Join the Great Basin Group as we host the Black Rock High Rock NCA Visitor Contact Trailer in beautiful downtown Gerlach. We will leave Reno Friday night and camp in the Black Rock area or stay at the world renowned BLM House. Volunteers will provide information and assist visitors to the Black Rock. No experience needed. Participants are responsible for all gear, food and water. All are welcome; all you need is the desire to help. ND. Leader: Kurt Kuznicki (745-3119). Easy.

June 4 (Sunday)
Biking on the Steamboat Ditch.
Moderate bike ride along the Steamboat Ditch Trail. Learn about this popular trail in Reno. Ride will be 15-25 miles depending upon group, little elevation gain. ND. Leader: Ken Hayes (746-8274). Moderate.

June 6 (Tuesday)
Easy Conditioning Hike.
Slow-paced hikes throughout the summer. We will hike 3-4 miles for 2 hours, with minimal to moderate elevation gain, in the parks and foothills of the Truckee Meadows. June 7 (Wednesday)
Fast-paced Conditioning Hike.
Hike in the hills surrounding the Truckee Meadows. Learn about great places to go and the flora or fauna. All hikes are about 4-5 miles, up to 1,200 ft. gain. Bring water, trail shoes, windbreaker. DOK. Call for recorded message starting on the Monday before each hike. Leader: Holly Coughlin (331-7488). Moderate.

June 8 (Thursday)
Carson City Conditioning Hike.
Brisk evening walk in the foothills of Carson City. Visit and learn about the local pine trees and budding wildflowers. 4-5 miles, up to 1,000 ft. gain. Bring boots, water, and windbreaker. DL. Leader: Ridge Walker (853-8055; edc@unr.edu). Moderate.

June 10 (Saturday)
Humbug Trail.
Second Saturday of June is Malakoff Diggins Homecoming, so North Bloomfield will be crowded, but day use fees are waived. Learn about hydraulic mining and historical environmental issues. Hike is 6 miles, but steep at 1,000 ft. gain and loss from North Bloomfield to Yuba River. When winters are mild, one of the finest swimming holes around. ND. Leader: Craig Mastos (786-7742). June 9-11 (Friday through Sunday)
Sheldon National Wildlife  Refuge Service Trip.
Join us for the Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge service trip in northern Washoe County on June 10 and 11. On Saturday, depending on the number of people who attend, we will remove fence, restore historic willow corrals or photograph springs (where horses have been removed). June 11 (Sunday)
Petersen Mountain Day Hike.
Late Spring hike to the crest of Petersen Mountain. We should see lots of blooming irises and maybe some deer or antelope at play. Learn about the flora and fauna of this range. Hike is about 8 miles with 1,500 ft. elevation climb to the linear valley in the split ridge. DL. Leader: Ridge Walker (85308055; edc@unr.edu), Co-leader: Dan Tyma (883-4151). Moderate.

June 12 (Monday)
Outings Meeting.
All leaders, co-leaders or others interested in outings are encouraged to attend our meeting to plan for August and September. Learn what the requirements are to be an Outings Leader. Meet around 6:30 at Holly's home until schedule is full. Opportunities to lead hikes, bike rides, or other ideas. We'll have hamburgers, vege-burgers, hot dogs, and chicken available along with all beverages. Please bring an appetizer, salad, or desert to share. June 16-17 (Friday/Sunday)
Hike, Bike, and Kayak Camp Trip.
A triathlon of activities to choose from. We plan to car camp in the Truckee area near a quiet lake that offers great kayaking and biking opportunities. On Saturday morning we plan to go for a tranquil kayak trip around part of the lake. In the early afternoon, we'll go for a moderate hike of 6-8 miles to a nearby location. Sunday, we plan to do a mountain bike ride between 15-25 miles from camp. Participants may go on all or parts of this outing. The lake is nice for swimming or fishing, too. Please call by Wednesday, the 14th to attend. Camp fee will be split. It is possible to drive up on Saturday morning to join us. Trip limit for camp 14. DL. June 17 (Saturday)
Rubicon Trail.
Hike along Lake Tahoe shore from D.L. Bliss Park to Emerald Bay and back. Learn about ospreys, the old lighthouse, and Vikingsholm. Hike is moderate at 9 miles and 500 ft. gain. Great opportunity for swimming and lounging on the warm beach during lunch. Parking fee. ND. Leader: Craig Mastos (786-7742). Moderate.

June 17 (Saturday)
Box Flume Route.
Carson City to Hobart and Red House, looking at, and following portions of, the route of the circa 1870s box flume which brought water from Hobart to Virginia City. Strenuous; about 2500 feet of vertical gain and about 15 miles. Great views of Little Valley and Washoe Lake/Valley and of course Carson City  No dogs. Sage Hen Creek Flower Hike.
 We’ll follow Sage Hen Creek. This creek drainage is known for its unusually large number of wild flower species also often have interesting bird watching. Hike will be 5-6 miles, moderately easy, 600’ elevation gain. DOK. Leaders: Sally Lyon: (530-582-4943, sally@mytahoevacation.com). Moderate.

Evening Conditioning Hike.
We'll hike the Granite Hills near Stead. This granite area has great views, wildflowers and mining history. Observe the impact of OHV usage on the urban fringe. Peak bag for the energetic. About 3-4 miles, 800 ft. gain. DL. Leader: David Von Seggern (323-4835), Co-leader: Dorthy Hudig (323-4835). Moderately Easy.

June 21 (Wednesday)
Hike East Truckee Area.
Hike in the mountains east of Truckee, from 6-ish until dark.3-5 miles, 500-700' elevation gain. Optional BBQ on Sally's back porch afterwards. Hiking boots, water, and windbreakers recommended. DOK. Leader: Sally Lyon (530-582-4943, sally@mytahoevacation.com). Moderate.

Loch Leven Lakes.
One of the classic hikes. Learn about the railroad. Hike about 7 miles with 1,000 ft. gain. Excellent swimming and lunch spot at the middle lake. ND. Leader: Craig Mastos (786-7742). Moderate.

Jamison Falls and Jamison Lake.
This hike is geared toward families with children and fellow hikers who want to take it easy. Learn about the flora in the area. Hike is about 5 miles with 1,000 ft. gain. If permitting, we may roast marshmellows and hotdogs before taking a dip in Rock Lake. Weather conditions may cancel trip. DL. Trip limit 12. June 24  (Saturday)
Lake Paddle, North Lake Tahoe, Sand Harbor.
This is a Class I paddle near the town of Incline Village. Skirt the shoreline while weaving through the granite boulders. Must be able to paddle all day at a moderate pace. Fee at State Park. June 24 (Saturday/Sunday)
Black Rock Wilderness Volunteer Event.
Join the Wild Places Tour as we venture off to the far reaches of the Black Rock Desert. We will work with BLM and other Black Rock user groups on a volunteer project in one of the areas wild places. We will leave Friday night and camp in the Black Rock and return to Reno Sunday afternoon. These events are always fun and very rewarding. If you want to explore the Black Rock or want to do something for the land this is your chance. There is a job for persons of all abilities. We will work on Saturday and then spend Sunday hiking and exploring. Participants are responsible for their own gear, food, and water. High clearance vehicles with good tires and good spares are a must. Car pooling available (gas money for drivers). DL. Leader: Kurt Kuznicki (745-3119). Moderate.

June 25 (Sunday)
Mt. Rose Dayhike.
Join us for a hike beginning at the new trailhead for Mt. Rose. Hike is 10 miles with over 2,200 ft. of gain. Learn about the flora and fauna of this Wilderness area. Great photography opportunities. June 25 (Sunday)
Deadwood Peak 9,846.
This hike near Carson Pass will be about 11 miles and at least 2,200 feet of gain. The hikes are limited to 8. Bring the 10 essentials, 3 quarts water, lunch, and snacks. Medium-paced Conditioning Hike.
Join me for a hike on Peavine. HIke will be 3-4 miles, up to 800 ft. gain. We will meet at 5:45 PM in the parking lot near the Raley's in Golden Valley. Bring plenty of water, trail shoes, and a big smile. DOK. Leader: Grace Blaylock (677-9257). Moderately easy.

June 29 (Thursday)
Longest Twilight Conditioning Hike.
Hike to the highest point on the eastern ridge of Reno. The "Road to Nowhere Hill" at 6,076 ft. elevation to see the sunset and twilight of the year. Ramble through and observe pinyon pine, juniper, and if we are lucky we might see wild mustangs and golden eagles. Hike is 6 miles and has 1,500 ft. gain. DL.
