Join the fun! The 100 Mile Summer is here!
Get an entry card from any one of our Outings Leaders to participate in the 100 Mile Summer.
All you have to do is fill in the date, outing title, and miles. As you participate on outings from June 1 - September 24 have your leader sign the card and count up your miles. Only official Sierra Club Outings are eligible, including all the conditioning hikes. On October 14, all members who completed 100 miles or more are encouraged to join us for a celebration in remembrance of our summer journeys. This is going to be a great party! In December, we will print the names of all the participants who hiked 100 miles or more in the Trails and on our Web site. So don't miss out, get your card and start counting up your miles.
 

July 1 (Saturday)
Lola Montez Dayhike.
Learn about butterflies, birds, and yes, mosquitoes. This hike sometimes involves a creek crossing that can be tricky. (water footwear for the crossing is helpful). Great traditional adventure finding the upper lake. Hike is about 7 miles with 1,000 ft. gain in elevation. Swimming and sunbathing opportunities are excellent. ND. Leader: Craig Mastos (786-7742). July 1 (Saturday)
High Beginner Mountain Bike Tahoe Group.
This will be a high beginner bike for people who are in fairly good shape and have been mountain biking. 15 miles and about 900’ elevation gain. Some hills but nothing technical. We will ride around Boca Lake on dirt roads and some pavement. Leader: Glenn Polochko (530-587-5906, gpolochko@yahoo.com). Intermediate

July 8 (Saturday)
Tahoe Meadows Interpretive Trail.
Easy-paced outing geared for families with young children or people who want a stroll. Hike will meander along the interpretive trail in the meadows. Learn about the flora and fauna that make up the ecosystem in this area. About 2-3 miles, 200 ft. elevation gain. DOK with leash. Leader: Laura Brigham (786-7497), Co-leader: Dorthy Hudig (323-4835). July 8 (Saturday)
Jamison Lake Dayhike.
Great hike from Jamison mine area to Jamison Lake. Learn about historical mining activities. Hike is about 6 miles and 1,000 ft. gain. Eat lunch, swim and lounge. May have traditional ice cream stop after the hike. ND. Leader: Craig Mastos (786-7742). Moderate.

July 8th (Saturday)
Bear Lakes Loop Family Day Hike.
This hike is geared more towards families with children or for those who wish to take it easy.  There will be a discussion on the principals of leave no trace. We will visit five lakes along the way, so bring your swim trunks for some great swimming after lunch!  Easy hike, 3 miles, 340 elevation gain. Trip limit 15. DL. Carpool is strongly encouraged. July 8-9 (Saturday and Sunday)
Smoldering Woman/Playa By Moonlight.
Enjoy the playa of the Black Rock Desert by the almost full moon.
We'll arrive on the playa around 5-5:30 when it is cooling down and have some refreshments and potluck supper.
Then we can hike or bike on the moonlight playa and also enjoy a campfire. Musical instruments, families and dogs are welcome. We will depart by 10 or so the next morning, before it gets too hot, and possibly visit a nearby hot spring.

July 9 (Sunday)
Moonlight in North Reno.
See northern Reno in moonlight from BLM land. Hike will be 3-4 miles, 500 ft. gain in elevation. Learn about local fauna; especially the elusive coyote. July 10 (Monday)
Ophir Creek Conditioning Hike.
Steady and steep 3 mile trek up to large flat boulder field, 800 ft. gain. Hike for 2 hours. Bring water, boots, and windbreaker. Meet at Davis Creek Campground. Take 395 South to Bowers Mansion turnoff. Turn right. Proceed one mile to Davis Creek Campground and turn right. Trailhead starts at the last parking lot inside park. Observe native bird habitiat. July 11 (Tuesday)
Easy-Paced Conditioning Hike.
Slow-paced conditioning hike for 3-4 miles with minimal to moderate elevation gain in the parks and foothills in the Truckee Meadows. Learn about flora or fauna of the are we visit. July 12 (Wednesday)
Evening along Thomas Creek.
Easy hike along Thomas Creek to Arrow Creek Park and back. About 3 miles, little gain. Learn about wilderness and urban issues. Hike will start at 5:45. DL. Trip limit 20. Leader: Dorthy Hudig (323-4835; hudig@med.unr.edu), Yvonne Jerome (851-3043). Easy.

July 15 (Saturday)
Middle Velma Lake Dayhike.
This is a tougher hike from Bayview Trailhead. Great views of Lake Tahoe from the trail, but very steep. Learn about glacial runoff, a mere blink of an eye in geological time. Hike is 12 miles and 2,000 ft. elevation gain. Trip limit of 12 by permit in Desolation Wilderness. Possible parking fee. ND. Leader: Craig Mastos (786-7742), Gary Hanneman (746-0771; 336-7698). July 15 (Saturday)
Shirley Canyon Wildflower Hike.
Visit Squaw Valley as we follow Squaw Creek up the canyon and see great  wildflowers before arriving at Shirley Lake We climb about 1500 feet over 6 miles. The hike starts at 9:30AM and will return in late afternoon. Leader: Roger Rosenberger. July 15-16 (Saturday/Sunday)
Black Rock Leave No Trace Training Event.
The Wild Tour proudly presents this years Leave No Trace "Train the Trainers" backpack. This year's event will be held high in the cool picturesque aspen groves of the North Black Range. Brian Murdock, the LNT master trainer will be our instructor. Participants are responsible for own gear, water, and food. High clearance vehicles with good tires and a good spare are a must. Car pooling will be available (gas money for drivers). Hike will be 4-6 miles with 800-1,500 ft. gain. Place call ASAP so we can send your LNT workbook before the trip. (No cost for workbook). ND. Lakes Basin hike.

July 16 (Sunday)
Ophir Creek Dayhike.
This is a strenuous 12 miles, close to 4,000 ft. gain, dayhike in the Carson Range. We will start in Washoe Valley and go to the Tahoe Meadows, where we'll have lunch and then return. The descent is very steep. We'll go by upper and lower Price Lakes to observe the recuperation of the flora since the famous land slide in 1983. Must bring at least one quart of water. We will have an early start due to the length of the hike. Trip limit 12. DOK. Leader: Grace Blaylock (677-9257). Strenuous.

July 18 (Tuesday)
Easy-paced Conditioning Hike.

July 19 (Wednesday)
Fast-Paced Conditioning Hike.
Join me for a hike 4-5 miles, 1,000 ft. gain +, somewhere in the hills surrounding the Truckee Meadows. Learn about local flora, fauna, or history. Bring water, trail shoes, and windbreaker. Call for a recorded message the Monday before the hike. DOK. Leader: Holly Coughlin (331-7488). Moderate.

July 22 (Saturday)
Wildflower Study Dayhike.
Slow-paced hike with spectacular vistas of mountains and lakes. Wildflowers should be in profusion. Learn to identify some Sierra wildflowers. In the past, we have found more than 50 different species. Hike is easy 4 miles and maybe 500 ft. gain. Optional longer hike to Round Top Lake 5-6 miles with 1,000 ft. gain. Trip limit 12. ND. July 22  (Satturday)
Lake Paddle, Fallen Leaf Lake.
This is a Class I paddle near the town of South Lake Tahoe. We can skirt the shoreline. Must be able to paddle all day at a moderate pace. May have a fee for launch. July 22 (Saturday)
Ice-Skating, Swimming, and Dinner.
Ice Skating and swimming in Squaw Valley. Skate outdoors in Olympic-size rink in Squaw Valley and swimming in pool and giant jacuzzi. Temperature around 80 degrees at high camp (8,200 ft. elevation). Meet at High Camp Ice Rink at 2 PM or meet to carpool at McDonald's parking lot near Safeway at MaeAnn and McCarren in Reno at 12:15 PM. At 6 PM group will leave Squaw Valley for dinner in Truckee. July 22 (Saturday)
Jones Creek White Creek Loop.
HIke is about 9 miles long and 2,000 ft. gain. Trail follows aspen lined creeks and canyons. Observe the flora in this area. Bad weather will cancel. Contact leaders before Friday. DL. Leader: John Cossavella (750-7270), Shanel (425-4962). Moderately Strenuous.

July 23 (Sunday)
Tinker's Knob Dayhike.
This is a sixteen mile roundtrip hike with 1,400 ft. plus elevation gain. Participants must be in good hiking shape. Vistas are incredible and the Mule Ears should be in full bloom. July 23 (Sunday)
Shower's Lake and Meiss Ridge.
Trek the upper Truckee River area. Stream crossings necessary. Educational segment. Count on wildflowers and scenic views. Hike is about 9 miles long and has an elevation gain of 1,500 ft. T-storms cancel. ND. Leader: T A Taro (775-530-2935). Moderately Strenuous.

July 23 (Sunday)
Carson Pass Wildflower Photography Hike.
See and photograph the most extravagant flower show at Lake Tahoe. Bring your camera as we will share ideas and perspectives on wildflower photography. July 25 (Tuesday)

Hike East Truckee Area
. Hike in the mountains east of Truckee, from 6-ish until dark.3-5 miles, 500-700' elevation gain. Optional BBQ on Sally's back porch afterwards. Hiking boots, water, and windbreakers recommended. DOK. Leader: Sally Lyon (530-582-4943, sally@mytahoevacation.com). Moderate.

July 26 (Wednesday)
Fast-Paced Conditioning Hike.

July 29 (Saturday)
Half Moon Lake Hike.
Hike from Glen Alpine, Fallen Leaf Lake, to Half Moon Lake in the Desolation Wilderness. Lake offers choice between rocky half or green half during lunch, and great swimming either way. Learn about large schools of fish in nearby creeks. Hike is about 10 miles long and 2,000 ft. of gain. Trip limit of 12 by permit. ND. July 29 (Saturday)
Tahoe Rim Trail Easy Wildflower Hike.
Join us for this slow-paced hike which is geared for elders or families with young children. The hike will be maximum 4 miles and little elevation gain. We'll take time to stop, observe, and smell the wildflowers. DOK with leash. Leader: Marge Sill (322-2867), Co-leader: Vicki Smith (826-0932). Easy.

July 29 (Saturday)
Mount Rose Wildflower and Lake Tahoe Ecology.
Join our group at 8AM and hike us will see a wide variety of terrain and flowers as we climb all the way into the alpine zone. This hike is 12 miles round trip with a climb of 2000 feet. Robinson Peak 10,793, Matterhorn Peak 12,264.
Near Bridgeport. Robinson is 11 miles/3,712 feet of gain. Matterhorn is 13 miles/5,200 feet of gain. Limited to 8. Bring the 10 essentials, 3 quarts water, lunch, snacks. Car camp. July 30 (Sunday)
Wildflower Study Hike.
(Rescheduled from 7/16 due to large snow fields.) Slow-paced hike with spectacular vistas of mountains and lakes. Wildflowers should be in profusion. Learn to identify some Sierra wildflowers. In years past, 50 different species found here. Hike will be about 4 miles and 500 ft. gain, unless you want to go on an optional longer hike to Round Top Lake. Then 5-6 miles and 1,000 ft. gain. Martis Burn Hike to Juniper Hill.
Learn about the Martis burn fire. An interesting hike with many different environments to pass through including a Mountain Mahogany forest and intense burn sight.
