Great Basin Group general meeting. Do you enjoy the quality of life
we have here in the Truckee Meadows? Are you concerned about what the future
holds for this beautiful area we call
home? Well, you may want to come hear what Scott Gibson or Stacey Lomer
and Scenic Nevada have to say in their presentation, "Sprawl in
the Truckee Meadows." With new developments springing up at a
startling rate we may find that the consequences of such growth are not
always positive. This fascinating presentation should give you lots to
think about as we try to influence our elected officials regarding what
is best for the future of our area. Location: Bartley Ranch

Firestone property Snowshoe or hike. Near Tahoe City, Cal. 4+ mi,
mostly flat, 3-5 hrs, meet at 10 am. Learn why some locals oppose development
here, prefer open space/bike trail. See connection of publicly-owned lands,

Ophir Creek Trail to Upper Price Lake. Partial loop trail to a reservoir
through lush meadows. For conditioned hikers only. 5.8 mi, 3000 ft gain.
Steady and steep, the trail passes through willows and yellow aspen.
Upper Price is an old reservoir. A large, flat boulder beside its outlet
provides a fine picnic spot with views over the reflective little lake.

Leaders choice dayhike. Fall is fine time to hike in the desert. 8 mi,
1500 ft gain. Destination depends on weather, but most likely in the
Virginia Mountains near Pyramid Lake. Leaern about the flora, fauna and
geology of the region. DL. Leader: Holly Coughlin (331-7488). Moderate.
NOVEMBER 14 (SUNDAY)
Little Burbank Canyon hike. Attempt this little-traveled canyon to try
and reach the upper canyon. 6 mi, 2500 ft gain. An "exploration" trip. Little
Burbank is steep, with some scrambling needed. Not for the faint of heart.
Solitude and spectacular scenery will be the reward. ND. Leader: Kurt Kuznicki

Bald Eagle day hike. Spot bald eagles north of Truckee. This is a migration
stopover where freshwater salmon are abundant. Great views of the Carson

Hidden Valley dayhike. Take the trail loop above Hidden Valley Park

Beginners day hike. Leaders choice trip will take newcomers
on a short 3-4 mi, 400 ft gain hike. Introduction to the principles that
the Sierra Club defends. Learn how to be prepared for the outdoors. Bring

Desert day hike. Leaders choice in Pyramid Lake area. 5-8 mi, 1500 ft gain.
Enjoy great views, hike through canyon with stunning trees and rock formations.

Memorial Hike. Lang Milligan will lead a short hike including
a memorial service for Gloria Sondergaard, to one of her favorite desert places.
This will be coordinated with Lucrecia's outing (above) on the same date. Meet
at the Starbuck's at Pyramid Way/McCarran, 9AM. Dress for weather, some rough
uphill terrain, distance 3+ mi. OW. Easy.
NOVEMBER 25 (THURSDAY)
Pre-turkey dinner hike. 2 nd annual event will work up an appetite
on a short hike in the local hills before the big feast. 5 mi, 1500 ft gain.
Great alternative to football and parades. Learn what is happening with wilderness

Desatoya WSA hike. Travel to the Big Den waterfalls in east central
Nevada. 6 mi, 1500 ft gain. Learn about the rich history of this area.
Stop in Middlegate, home to one of the best hamburgers in the state. Bad

Leaders choice day hike. Depending on the weather, head to the
mountains to observe the transition in landscape through elevation gain
as the weather gets cooler. 10 mi, 2000 ft gain. Discuss the changes as

DECEMBER 11 (SATURDAY)
Annual holiday party. Mark your calendars now for a really special
holiday party from 7 to 10 pm at Fleur de Lis in SE Reno. Guests must park
outside the gate, but a host will provide access to the clubhouse, which
is close. Take 395 to So Mdws Pkwy, exit 60. Turn left and follow to the
end. Turn right on WilburMae and go about .8 mi to Fleur de Lis on left.
Handicapped parking near clubhouse if needed. Bring a dish to share. Drinks,
