March 2008 topical issue: I-80 Corridor Study.
The Southeast Connector Roadway has been a long-simmering issue within Reno. In one form or another,
it has been studied for at least two decades. Recently, the Regional Transportation Commission (RTC) has brought it to the forefront.
A public meeting in January focused on a "corridor" within which the roadway should be placed. This corridor passes through a large
open space within the City of Reno east of McCarren Blvd and under the Virginia Range. This open space exists largely because it is flood
plain and wetlands. A variety of birdlife inhabits or visits these wetlands, creating an opportunity for concentrated bird-watching within our
city. Because it is flood plain, the Truckee River Flood Committee has looked closely at this area for flood control; and the building
of a 4-lane roadway through it presents new problems to the integrity of the flood plan. Check the RTC's website for further information
on the Southeast Connector and let us know your opinions..
