May 8 (Thursday)
GB Group general meeting. Geologic Tales of Lake Tahoe How was Lake Tahoe formed? A meteorite…volcanic eruption…glaciers? Few people who visit Lake Tahoe know much about the geology of the largest alpine lake in North America. Western Nevada College Geology Professor Winnie Kortemeier, a dynamic and funny speaker, will give a multimedia presentation about the lake’s ancient volcanic activity. She will talk about fallacies of how Lake Tahoe was formed and explain the most recent ideas on that topic. She will also discuss her recent research on the youngest volcanic rocks in the region and the insight that those rocks give to not only Lake Tahoe’s formation, but also the type of eruption that might be expected in the Tahoe Basin in the future. Location: Bartley Ranch (South on Lakeside Dr., just before Windy Hill). Time: 7:00 social, 7:30 – 8:30 Program. Info: Larry (786-8564).
May 18 (Sunday) 10:00 am - 3:00 pm
McCarran Ranch Open House
The Nature Conservancy's Truckee River Project staff will be on hand for a tour of the Ranch, where birds, fish and native plants are again thriving. Now that 5 miles of river at McCarran Ranch have been successfully restored to a more natural state-- including 18 in-stream riffles, 11 wetlands, 120 acres of revegetation and a new meander that reconnected the river to its natural floodplain. The Nature Conservancy is overseeing the restoration of 15 additional river miles. We are also implementing a comprehensive public access recreation, and education plan at McCarran Ranch
