The end result of pulling out of the 42-year-old compact would be development on the Nevada side which would have an impact on the health of Lake Tahoe, one of the West’s magnificent natural places, renowned for the clarity of its water. Conservationists have fought the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency in court over development issues, but they still recognize that the two-state agency, created in 1969, plays a critical role in overseeing development on both sides of the lake and protecting the health of the lake. “Tahoe's water clarity can only be preserved if Nevada and California work together,” said Jean Stoess, Toiyabe Chapter chair, former member of TRPA’s governing board and former Washoe County commissioner. “Tahoe's water doesn't stop at the state line.” The Toiyabe Chapter is urging supporters to contact the Nevada Legislature and register their opposition to this bill. |
